What is a content mangement system and what will it do for your website ?
If you're looking for a website, you may have come across a lot of terms, that you're not familiar with, one of these will be CMS .
CMS stands for Content Management System, and is probably the most important thing to look for when getting a new website.
A CMS is the website owners own login, where they can control all aspects of the sites content .· In the early days of the Internet it was rare to have a CMS with your website, and you would have had to pay a web designer to make any changes on the content of your site. If you have a CMS this shouldn't be needed anymore, as you will have easy access to add to or change your content without having to do any coding / programming.· There are still some web design companies who still employ this outdated practise, so avoid such charlatans at all costs. It's just a rip-off.
A good CMS will allow you to add / edit articles menu's images, and to some extent design elements without any technical knowledge. If you have an e-commerce site it will allow you to update your products, generate invoices, and much more.
The most popular CMS at the moment is Joomla, which is completely free, but would require a bit of learning to actually install. Once installed however, there are then hundreds of extensions / modules you can easily install on your site, just by uploading and configuring. There's virtually no limit on what you can do with your site, and· a lot of the added functionality is free, or· very cheap.
There are many more CMS' available such as word-press and Dru-pal, but Joomla is the one that has the most flexibility and has brilliant on-going support.
